For readily accessible windows at home, you do not need a large collection of equipment. Clean tools, a suitable cleaning product and a consistent sequence matter more. This guide explains which tool handles each part of the job.

A soft washer or suitable cloth spreads the cleaning solution. A squeegee removes the water. A separate clean, lint-free cloth collects residual water at the edges. Use a different cloth for frames so that their dirt does not return to the glass.
The basic kit
- Bucket of clean water: Change dirty water instead of carrying it onto the next window.
- Soft washer or cleaning cloth: Choose a material suitable for your glazing and check it for trapped dirt.
- Squeegee with an intact rubber blade: Match its width to the pane. Check the blade for dirt and damage.
- Separate cloths: One for frames and sills, and a clean lint-free cloth for the glass edges.
- Suitable cleaner and floor protection: Follow the window care instructions and the product's dosing directions.
A brand name does not replace checking a cloth's condition and suitability. Wash and dry reusable cloths according to their care labels; one washing temperature does not suit every product.
A clear cleaning sequence
- Prepare access. Clear the sill and protect sensitive surfaces from drips. Only work where you can stand securely and reach the pane safely.
- Clean frames first. Remove loose dirt with a suitable soft cloth. Do not then use that cloth to finish the glass.
- Wash the glass. Apply the correctly diluted solution with the washer. Follow the manufacturer's requirements for coated glass.
- Squeegee the water away. Work in overlapping passes from top to bottom. Wipe the rubber blade clean between passes.
- Dry the edges. Collect remaining water at the edges with the clean glass cloth. Check the result from another angle before polishing the whole pane again.
What if streaks remain?
First check the cloth, water and squeegee. Pressing harder does not compensate for a dirty cloth or damaged blade. Check the cleaner dosage too. Work in smaller sections if the solution is already drying on the glass before you can remove it.
Vinegar, scrapers and specialist products?
A household recipe is not blanket approval for use on glass, frames and seals. Only use vinegar or specialist cleaners where the care instructions permit them. Do not start on stubborn residue with a blade or abrasive pad: establish the material and appropriate method first.
When is professional help useful?
